AV BUTTERFLY CUE
BIG LEAF MAPLE &
EAST INDIAN ROSEWOOD
AV Cues is the brand name for cues being made by Andy VanderVoord of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has established his own niche by exclusively making butterfly cues of high quality and playability. This is another fine example of his work.
This one is made from a blending of two unique and unusual woods: East Indian Rosewood and Big Leaf Maple. The Big Leaf Maple has been stabilized and has beautiful burl figure.
The East Indian rosewood is also nicely figured, and slightly darker than the Big Leaf Maple, which is a lighter, smokier brown. The contrast between the two is subtle and pleasing.
The veneers are especially pretty in this cue. They are made from maple, ebony and padauk. They form two beautiful butterflies and two sharp, traditional points.
He adds a very nice detail on this cue which enhances its looks. He stacks matching rings of veneers (of ebony, maple and padauk) above the black phenolic butt cap to form a unique ring design. It's a great look.
At the joint, he adds a black phenolic joint with a stainless steel radial pin in a flat-faced configuration, which results in a great hitting cue as well as a very pretty one.
| |
| As usual, he adds his stylized AV logo by engraving it in the butt cap. He also engraves it on the top of each of his custom joint protectors - a nice touch. He adds a matching black phenolic ring collar on his shaft.
Finally, this cue has one more distinctive and unique feature. The shaft is made from Hickory. I've hit a number of balls with these shafts of his, and was very surprised how crisp and nicely they hit. The wood is a little darker than we're used to, and shows some grain, but the hit is excellent. If you're looking for something a little different, this is an excellent option.
The shaft is 13mm with a short 1/2" Aegis II ferrule. The stick weighs 18.9 ounces.
