RICHARD BLACK 1985 CLASSIC
Here's a chance to get a classic cue from a Hall of Fame cuemaker at a great price. This one was made in 1985 and was just refinished and made almost as good as new. It's a one-of-a-kind cue with a unique design, and very classy.
This cue starts with a simple four point design using ebony points lined with red veneers into a birdseye maple nose. To add some additional class, Richard added a solid ivory piloted joint. It has a solid ebony butt sleeve with red veneered rectangles, with a unique diamond shaped design on each side. The ivory "diamonds" have been engraved with a simple red design.
It has nickel rings above and below the joint, and comes with matching custom-made joint protectors with ivory caps. When this cue was refinished, I asked that it be fitted with a soft black leather wrap that was customary for cues made at this time.
This cue comes with the two original shafts that are both in great shape - pretty straight for a cue of this vintage with no dings or dents. This cue has obviously been played, and there is a little wear around the bottom of the black butt cap. Otherwise, this cue looks almost new after the refinish job. One shaft is 12.8mm and the other is just under 12.9mm. It weighs 19.8 ounces.
For someone wanting a unique cue from a top cuemaker at a great price, this one is available at $2400. And, it looks great in a Whitten soft black leather case than matches the wrap on the cue. With the case, the cue is $2650.
(Richard Black is now making just a few high end cues for a special benefactor. He recently made an appearance at the International Cue Collector Show in Sarasota and announced he will not be making many more cues. His cues have already gone up considerably since his induction into the Cuemaker Hall of Fame, and when he completely retires, these kinds of cues will jump in value.)
