JON SPITZ FOUR POINT COCOBOLO AND MAPLE
This is a nice cue from a relatively new cuemaker who is doing good, clean work and making some simple, pretty cues. It's a four-pointer made from a John Davis full-splice blank, and it hits a ton. (At the recent Derby City Classic, Dennis Arcullo obtained one and was so impressed with it he used it in a match a half hour later, winning 9-3!)
| Jon began this cue with the Davis blank of maple with cocobolo points, and sycamore veneers of olive, mahogany and maple colors. It's a plain design, but with clean lines and a classy look.
He adds a white, brown speckled linen wrap that is pressed and polished, with a delrin butt cap and a juma joint. He adds ringwork of small vertical lines of .999 fine silver. Nothing over the top - just a couple of small enhancements to make this cue have a little "pop."
Jon uses a 3/8X10 modified pin at the joint, with a flat faced joint. The delicate silver ring pattern is a nice touch.
It comes with two 13mm shafts with juma ferrules, tipped with soaked and pressed Triangle tips. He uses what he calls a "conical" taper, meaning it starts tapering at the ferrules and gradually tapers all the way back to the joint. He describes the hit of his cues as "fairly stiff."
This cue sells for $1,250, and with the extra cost of the Davis blank included ($300), it's a good deal. (I suspect his cues will not stay at these prices long.)
