Anyone familiar with Tad Kohara's cues will instantly recognize this classic design. It's one of his mid-range priced cues. He uses four points of ebony into pretty birdseye maple, with his traditional five layers of veneer - black, red, blue, black and maple. (I can remember when everyone else was only doing four veneers, and his were special because of this.)
Nonetheless, his veneer work is still excellent, and you can really see his fine craftsmanship demonstrated in the veneered boxes in the butt sleeve. He's "old school" with his use of 90 degree cuts in the corners, but his work is so good that they look great.
The butt sleeve is all "Tad" with his classic rings of square pieces of micarta, with small circles of ebony containing small mother of pearl dots in the middle of each. Nothing else identifies a cue as a Tad more quickly than this ring pattern, except maybe the fine feathered veneers in some of his higher end work.
As always, his points are razor sharp and the colors of the veneers are bright and beautiful.
In the middle of each point and each box in the butt sleeve he inlays a small notched diamond of micarta. (Typical of almost all Tad cues, there is no ivory in the butt of this cue; however, the ferrules are ivory.)
And as with all Tads, this cue has the extra long butt cap with the classic "Tad" logo engraved in black.
| |
| The work in all Tads is meticulous and exact. This cue is no exception.
Again, as with most Tads, this cue has his classic stainless steel piloted joint with a 5/16X18 pin. The rings at the joint and on the shaft sleeves are made up of small maple squares divided by thin lines of ebony.
This one is wrapped in fine white Cortland linen with very slight green specks - a classic wrap for a classic cue! The tips appear to be Champions.
This cue has been around for a few years, but is in excellent condition. One shaft appears to be unplayed, and the other is lightly played, although it's hard to tell without close examination. They are both 13mm, with ivory ferrules. It weighs 20.0 ounces.
PRICE: $3950
