VINTAGE VERL HORN CLASSIC
This cue is a very traditional eight point design, and has an extraordinary amount of ivory in it - four long ivory points with smaller ivory and ebony points in between, a solid ivory butt cap and joint, lots of ivory inlays in the butt sleeve and bold ivory stitch rings at all locations.
Verl Horn was known for his traditional designs and his use of large amounts of ivory in his designs. This cue is classic Horn. It is as good an example of his work as you'll find.
Horn cues are typically easy to identify because of their traditional design and use of ivory, but it's even better when they have his name on them. This one has his usual name/logo engraved just above the butt cap.
| |
The nose of the cue is birds-eye maple which has been lightly stained to a pretty reddish-brown color. The butt sleeve is pure black Gabon ebony.
| The butt sleeve has a lot of inlay work (all ivory) and really goes well with the nose of the cue with all the ivory points. This cue is really a knockout.
He built this one with a 3/8X10 stainless steel pin with a flat faced ivory joint. It's a nice hitting cue, and for a collector, a very typical example of his work.
I obtained this cue in a trade and don't know all its history. However, it appears to me it has been rewrapped, because I don't think Horn did wraps this nice. My guess is that it has also been resprayed, probably at the same time the wrap was done. It could be original, but if so, it's in awfully nice condition for a cue of this vintage.
It weighs 19.9 ounces, with either shaft. It comes with two original shafts that measure 12.95 and 12.98 mm, with matching ring collars and ivory ferrules. The butt is very straight, as are the shafts. One shaft has just a touch of roll out, but overall this cue is very straight for its age. Both shafts show signs of play, but are very clean. I think this cue received very light play. It is in excellent condition.
