THE "ARCHANGEL"
3x6 CASE
BY WPX LEATHERS
After obtaining the "Demons" case from Wpx Leathers in China a few years ago, I was anxious to get another example of their work. It looked lonely on my wall. With the help of Cheng at North Demon cues I was able to negotiate and commission the build of another case by them.
Master of Wpx knew that I already had the Demons case, so she suggested something different, and ultimately we agreed on a concept she had of an "Archangel" case. It seemed the perfect idea; it would stand in juxtaposition to the Demons case - good versus evil. The result is another masterpiece from her hands, this one focusing on one of the archangels, probably Michael, widely accepted as the warrior and protector among the archangels. The exceptional art and carvings are depictions of his work overcoming evil.

These cases, along with the Yang cases (also made in China) are the ultimate in artisan class leather cases for cues. The Eastwood cases, by Phil Eastwood of Colorado, are also at the top of the case pyramid, but are a very different style and are hard to compare. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
If, someday, there comes to exist a museum or a curated exhibit within an existing art museum for billiards art, these cases should be displayed there. But for now I'm going to display a selection of pictures that I hope will convey how beautiful this case is. I hope the pictures do it some justice.

There are numerous other angels depicted in the carvings, including perhaps seraphims, cherubims, and other angels of all hierarchies. And since archangels especially are recognized by all of the Abrahamical religions, including Christianity, Judaism and Islam, the case has universal appeal.
At the bottom of the front, you can see the tip of the angel's sword impaling a demon's head. On top of the demon is laid a cross draped in rosary beads.
Suited in warrior's armor and sporting a sword, the angel Michael seems up to the task.
The angel's wings are widely spread, and wrap around the sides of the case. The finely textured carving is delicate and meticulous. You seldom see such fine work in leather carving.
A small cherub angel peers out from the bottom of the case.
Another angel from the top ...
And one more from the front of the lid.
And a couple more at the top of the front panel.
| |
The face on the rear tab of the lid (the hinge) is the most mysterious. Another angel, or a human?
And the large female figure on the back panel, with wings - another angel?
And the demon at the bottom of the back panel, shown cowering beneath her power.
Almost every square inch of this case is hand carved, even the sides. Attention is paid to every detail. Note the "fine" jewel at the bottom below the strap hinge, set in pewter.
Both the quantity and quality of the hand carvings in this case are extraordinary. Look at the fine, delicate carving of feathers in the wings. Imagine the amount of time and effort this required.
Portions of the side panel are pictured below ...
And finally, more angels.
And finally, a couple of pictures of the "Archangel" and the "Demon" cases side by side. An amazing set of cases, and a magnificent display of art and craftsmanship.
THESE CASES ARE NOT FOR SALE - FOR EXHIBIT ONLY.
